Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most iconic natural wonders on Earth. Located off the Queensland coast of Australia, it is home to a vast array of marine life, including coral reefs, fish, and other marine mammals. In 1975, the Australian government established the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to preserve the reef from human activities. In 2004, the government expanded the parks fully protected areas from 4.6% to 33.3%, making it the worlds largest protected marine area at 344,400 square kilometers. Despite the creation of the marine park, the Great Barrier Reef is under threat. When corals get stressed, they expel the colorful marine algae living inside their tissues called zooxanthellae. Zooxanthellae provide the coral with food and energy from the sun, allowing them to grow and reproduce. Without zooxanthellae, corals appear transparent and reveal their white skeletons. This is called ‘coral bleaching’. Coral bleaching can be caused by several factors, including heat stress from raised water temperatures and increased UV radiation. A temperature increase of just one degree Celsius for only four weeks can trigger bleaching. If it persists for long periods (eight weeks or more) corals begin to die. In the last two decades, the Great Barrier Reef has experienced six mass coral bleaching events, with the most recent in 2022. Coral reefs can recover from coral bleaching, but they need time and the right conditions. Typically, it can take around ten years for coral reefs to fully recover. However, if corals continue to get bleached every year or two years, there will not be enough time for coral reefs to have any chance at meaningful recovery. Climate change, which causes temperatures to rise on our land and in our oceans, is considered the biggest threat to the Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs around the world. Thus, we need urgent action on climate change to drastically reduce global emissions, but that alone is not enough. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we must make coral reefs more resilient and help them adapt to the warmer temperatures already caused by climate change.
26.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The Great Barrier Reef is an important ecosystem with remarkable biodiversity.
B.The Great Barrier Reef is the most famous natural wonder that needs to be protected.
C.Australian government has made significant efforts to stop coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef.
D.The Great Barrier Reef is in danger of coral bleaching.

A.Australia B.Queensland coast C. the Earth D. the Great Barrier Reef
28. Great Barrier Reef __________.
A. is the world’s largest reef system. B.stretches along the Queensland coastline in Australia.

29. The word “expel” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.

30. Coral bleaching __________.
